Description:

Longwood, designed in 1859 by Samuel Sloane, is the largest octagonal house (based on Asian pagodas popular in the 19th century) still standing in the United States. Because of the impact of the Civil War, the house was never completed, leaving it as a chilling reminder of the terrible effect the war had on the South. The home is located south of the city center, across the highway from the Duncan Park Golf Club.
